This week in Forest School we observed Orange Shirt Day and National Day of Truth and Reconciliation by reminding ourselves that we play on Indigenous land, and thanking those who have cared for this land since time immemorial. We shared stories like When We Were Alone (David Robertson) and My Heart Fills with Happiness (Monique Grey Smith). We reminded ourselves of our ongoing responsibilities to the land, each other, our neighbours, the trees, and all the other creatures around us.
We believe it is our role to regularly affirm to the children in Forest School that every child deserves to be respected just as they are. That every child deserves to be with those who love them. And that the ways we are with our loved ones (our food, languages, rituals, past times) are worthy of celebration and protection.
As we find ways to keep learning and teaching about the impacts of Residential Schools on Indigenous Peoples as well as the ongoing impacts of colonial policies, on both the Land and the People, we recommit ourselves to honour Truth. Today, September 30, and every day, Every Child Matters.
